“I’ve always wanted to write a book, but when it comes time to write, I just don’t know what to write about. How do I find the right book topic?”
During a recent consultation call, an aspiring author expressed her frustration with finding the right book topic. She’d been trying to write her book for a while, but every time she set out to start her book project, her mind went blank.
Typically, I have authors who come to me with a zillion book ideas and they don’t know which one is the best to start with. Sometimes, authors come to me with one good idea but they aren’t sure if it’s the right one. Then, there are those times when an author comes to me with no ideas at all. And simply asking, “What do you want to write about?” doesn’t help.
What do you do when you have the desire to write a book, but you can’t come up with a topic?
This is when I recommend writing prompts.
A writing prompt is a brief passage of text that provides a
potential topic idea or starting point for your writing.
I absolutely love writing prompts because they take the pressure off of you enough so that your brain feels free to explore. The open-ended questions spark your imagination and stimulate your creativity. Once you get started, your natural genius begins to take over and you’ll be able to turn a seemingly simple idea into something unique and intriguing.
